[OOC] Headcanon meme

All answers assume normal everyday life aboard the Enterprise. As of the time this was posted, the ship is in drydock for repairs.

What does their bedroom look like? The captain's quarters are the biggest aboard the Enterprise. It's one big single room with a half-wall partition separating the sleeping area from his workstation, which includes a desk and personal computer interface. There's a window above his single bunk that looks out into space, but no wall decorations. The furniture is all Starfleet-issued with no customization or variance from crew standard. There are two hidden doors in the sleeping area, one of which leads to a closet containing a dozen shipboard gold uniforms, two gray dress uniforms, one of each of the other styles of uniform, and a small selection of civilian clothing. The other door leads to a bathroom that is shared between the first officer's quarters next door. Other than his clothes, the only personal items on display are a crate of paperback books and some random knickknacks that he's picked up on various planets around Federation space.

Do they have any daily rituals? Jim always stops at the officers' mess every morning before his shift to get a bagel and coffee, which he usually refills before reporting to the bridge. Assuming there are no interruptions or crises that need to be addressed, he spends the first half hour of duty catching up on requisition forms and reports from the night shift. Jim and Spock are also in the habit of playing chess two to three times per week, usually around 1900 hours.

Do they exercise, and if so, what do they do? How often? Jim is a stickler for proper exercise. He lifts weights in the ship's gym at least three times a week, and spends thirty minutes on a treadmill every day. When their schedules coincide, he also spars with Spock or fences with Sulu.

What would they do if they needed to make dinner but the kitchen was busy? This isn't usually a problem on a starship, but if the synthesizers were down, Jim has a hoard of ration bars in his quarters. However, if the rest of the crew is going hungry, he would share his stash instead of eating them himself. If he was Earthside, he would order out for pizza or Bajoran takeout.

Cleanliness habits (personal, workspace, etc.)? It's pretty much impossible for Jim to make a mess on the bridge, but if it was he'd still keep it tidy. His quarters are a little more prone to being messy, but in a lived-in sort of way, not like a total slob. His personal hygiene is important to him so he always showers daily and often uses products in his hair, though he will sometimes refrain from shaving when on leave, or on certain holidays.

Eating habits and sample daily menu? Jim never forgets a meal. He eats three times per day and has been known to snack outside mealtimes, particularly when food is offered to him by someone else. Breakfast is nearly always coffee and a bagel, though the type of bagel varies from day to day. Lunch is usually a sandwich on whole wheat with meat, cheese, and veggies. Dinner tends to change depending on his mood and might include steak and potatoes, or a hearty meat stew. Jim doesn't keep kosher, but for personal reasons, he does not order pork or bacon unless there are no other options (he does eat ham since it tastes different enough). He'll also eat food containing pork or bacon if it would otherwise go to waste, since his hatred for food wastage is stronger than his aversion to pork.

Favorite way to waste time and feelings surrounding wasting time? Jim is an avid reader and can easily lose himself in a good book for a few hours at a time. He prefers to be active when possible, so he also sometimes listens to audiobooks while working out or engages in mixed martial arts training with various members of the crew. He doesn't mind being idle as long as he has something to work on, so during quiet moments on the bridge, he will occupy himself with reading interdepartmental reports or tactical journals.

Favorite indulgence and feelings surrounding indulging? Absolutely food. Jim is always on the lookout for new flavor combinations or exotic foods to try. Getting to try something new is usually the highlight of his day, regardless of whether he likes the food in question or not. He's also a fan of returning to familiar comfort foods, apples in particular.

Makeup? He doesn't typically wear any, but has been known to wear subdued tones of eyeshadow on occasion.

Neuroses? Do they recognize them as such? Besides compulsive food hoarding, Jim has abandonment issues. He easily attaches to most people on a social level, as he craves human contact, but he has trouble connecting with people on a deeper level since he subconsciously fears they'll eventually leave him. Jim is somewhat aware that this is a problem for him, but he isn't currently doing anything about it, as he believes his coping mechanisms are working well enough.

Intellectual pursuits? Jim likes classic literature and poetry, chess, and logic puzzles. He's also been known to study languages for fun.

Favorite book genre? Before Tarsus, Jim's favorite genre was adventure novels. After Tarsus, he now prefers historical fiction, and nonfiction survival guides. He's also quite fond of poetry.

Sexual Orientation? And, regardless of own orientation, thoughts on sexual orientation in general? By twenty-first century definitions, Jim is pansexual. Humans in his century don't tend to care about the sexual preferences of others outside their own relationships, and Jim is no exception. As long as everyone involved consents and are above their people's age of majority, Jim has zero problems with who is dating who.

Physical abnormalities (both visible and not, including injuries/disabilities, long-term illnesses, food-intolerances, etc.)? Jim has a number of old scars in various places on his body, a relative rarity in a society that can erase fresh flesh wounds with dermal regenerators. There is a straight, vertical surgical scar on his lower back that parallels the spine. He has a predisposition towards farsightedness, but is allergic to current drug therapy to correct vision problems, and as his vision isn't currently affected, he isn't too worried about it at the moment. He is also allergic to a handful of other drug therapies, including certain vaccines. He has no known food allergies.

Biggest and smallest short term goal? Biggest current goal is earning command of the five-year mission assignment. Smallest is getting back into shape after his long hospitalization from the Khan incident.

Biggest and smallest long term goal? Biggest is making a reputation for himself that does not credit his father for any of his achievements, which may include eventual promotion to admiral. Smallest is being able to beat Spock at chess five times in a row, which will likely take time.

Preferred mode of dress and rituals surrounding dress? Jim finds his shipboard duty uniform to be his favorite thing to wear, but since he can only wear it while on duty, his favorite civilian outfit is jeans and a T-shirt, with his black leather jacket. He never goes out without some kind of jacket unless it's unquestionably too hot or inappropriate.

Favorite beverage? Coffee with lots of cream and sugar.

What do they think about before falling asleep at night? Usually his agenda for the next day, or reflecting on the current day's events.

Childhood illnesses? Any interesting stories behind them? Jim contracted Vegan choriomeningitis when he was nine years old. Since his mother was offworld and his relationship with his stepfather Frank was a troubled one, Jim didn't say anything when the headaches and fever started, figuring it would run its course in due time. He didn't realize how sick he was until he collapsed in the shower the next morning and was found by his brother Sam, who immediately called Frank to take Jim to the nearest emergency room. By the time he was diagnosed and treatment began, Jim had been twenty hours into the 24-hour window to cure the illness before it became fatal. It took him two weeks to recover enough to go back to school, and he still carries the dead virus in his bloodstream.

Turn-ons? Turn-offs? Jim is generally a pretty sexually open guy and is willing to try most things at least once. He finds intelligence attractive and adores a partner who can quote relevant poetry or literature in bed. He is not into BDSM, anything involving body fluids that aren't the usual ones, humiliation, or any roleplay involving nonconsent.

Given a blank piece of paper, a pencil, and nothing to do, what would happen? He is likely to doodle people he knows or vehicles he's owned or driven. He's not terribly artistic, but his drawings are usually recognizable.

How organized are they? How does this organization/disorganization manifest in their everyday life? Jim is a fairly organized guy and he tends to stick to schedules and remember important dates. He always endeavors to be up to date on ship and crew's status every day so that any problems can be quickly and properly handled.

Is there one subject of study that they excel at? Or do they even care about intellectual pursuits at all? By Starfleet's reckoning, Jim's top marks lie in Tactics and, to a lesser extent, Engineering. His chosen subject of self-study is modern and archaic survival techniques.

How do they see themselves 5 years from today? He hopes to still be on the Enterprise, undertaking Starfleet's first five-year-long mission.

Do they have any plans for the future? Any contingency plans if things don’t workout? Jim plans to be captain of a starship as long as Starfleet will let him. He does hope to make it to admiral someday, but doesn't want that to be anytime soon. He doesn't have any contingency plans.

What is their biggest regret? At the moment, the thing that Jim regrets most is his mishandling of the Nibiru mission, as it was the first link in the chain of disasters that led to Admiral Pike's death, the loss of ninety-six Enterprise crew, Jim himself, and thousands of civilians.

Who do they see as their best friend? Their worst enemy? His best friend is Leonard McCoy, though Jim also harbors romantic and sexual attraction for him as well. His worst enemy is Kodos the Executioner.

Reaction to sudden extrapersonal disaster (eg The house is on fire! What do they do)? Contact the relevant authorities immediately, and then offer all assistance that he is equipped to give.

Reaction to sudden intrapersonal disaster (eg close family member suddenly dies)? Jim tends to seek solitude when he's distressed or grieving. Until recently, he would use alcohol to drown his sorrows, but is making an effort to avoid using depressants now.

Most prized possession? His commendation medal for original thinking, which he earned after the tribunal regarding his academic misconduct in reprogramming the Kobayashi Maru simulation ruled in his favor.

Thoughts on material possessions in general? He does not value having large quantities of stuff and tries not to get too attached to sentimental objects. Because he spent so many years of his life on the move, he endeavors to have few enough personal belongings that they can be easily transported at short notice.

Concept of home and family? Jim's feelings about family are complicated. He is somewhat disconnected from his cultural roots, particularly on the Kirk side of the family, and though he is closer to his maternal grandparents than he is to his own mother, he still doesn't know them as well as he'd like. Jim tends to think of family as the people you're emotionally closest to rather than strict blood relations. Home, likewise, is not a set location, but wherever you feel safe and loved.

Thoughts on privacy? (Are they a private person, or are they prone to ‘TMI’?) Jim is a private person that usually hides his inner feelings with bluster and sometimes false cheer.

What activities do they enjoy, but consider to be a waste of time? Sleep. Jim would rather put that time to more productive use, but his body is only human and whenever he's able to rest without nightmares, he's reluctant to get up in the morning.

What makes them feel guilty? Surviving when others didn't, or making a wrong decision that results in deaths.

Are they more analytical or more emotional in their decision-making? Until recently, emotional, Jim now tries to temper his emotional reactions with logic, and intends to seek out both Spock and McCoy's advice on any dilemmas.

Would they consider themselves a Type A or Type B personality? Type A, unquestionably.

What recharges them when they’re feeling drained? Spending time one-on-one with a close friend.

Would you say that they have a superiority-complex? Inferiority-complex? Neither? Jim has some degree of inferiority as he often feels like he has something to prove. While these feelings started at a young age, growing up in the shadow of his father's famous sacrifice, Tarsus IV made them much worse, as he was placed on the list of colonists that were considered less valuable and slated to be executed.

How misanthropic are they? In general, Jim likes people and tries to think the best of others.

Hobbies? Reading, chess, mixed martial arts, and boxing. He also plays guitar and violin, and can sing decently well.

How far did they get in formal education? What are their views on formal education vs self-education? Jim went to school until age twelve, when he was sent to Tarsus IV to live with his aunt after extensive misbehavior. The school there was shut down when the crops failed, and after he was released from the hospital, he ran away from home and switched entirely to self study. He did not enroll in any other formal schooling until age twenty-two, when he enlisted in Starfleet, and spent three years in the Academy before graduating with the rank of captain. Jim is supportive of self education but would encourage formal education for those who want a career in Starfleet or other science organizations.

Religion? Jim is Jewish, though he is not very spiritual. Before Tarsus IV, he kept kosher out of habit, but he doesn't anymore, except in regards to not eating bacon or pork, though that is not for religious reasons. Jim turned thirteen just after rescue from Tarsus IV and did not celebrate his bar mitzvah as he was in the hospital for quite some time. He did not observe most holidays during his transient years but is making an effort to reconnect with his heritage in recent years, with more of an emphasis on the community aspect than the religious part. He questioned his faith for years after Tarsus and is still in the process of working through his feelings and beliefs about God and the afterlife, but as most of his doubts come from experiences that are classified, he hasn't spoken to a rabbi for any guidance on the matter.

Superstitions or views on the occult? Jim is not superstitious at all. He believes that religion is nobody else's business unless it's being pushed on others, and that everyone should be free to seek whatever path makes them feel fulfilled.

Do they express their thoughts through words or deeds? Jim loves a good debate or persuasive argument, but he is also more than willing to let his actions speak for themselves.

If they were to fall in love, who (or what) is their ideal? Jim does not have one set ideal "type." He does prefer a physically attractive partner who he can share intellectually stimulating conversations with, someone who will make him grow as a person and vice versa. He does not have a gender or species preference.

How do they express love? Besides sex, Jim loves giving his partners compliments and encouragement, and likes to go on romantic outings.

If this person were to get into a fist fight, what is their fighting style like? Jim practices boxing and some mixed martial arts, so his fighting style is adaptable to the situation. Should the environment allow and the situation call for it, he will use nearby objects as improvised bludgeoning weapons.

Is this person afraid of dying? Why or why not? Yes, Jim is afraid to die, even though he's already done it once. He doesn't remember anything from his time as a corpse, and has no idea if anything lies beyond. His fear is less about the afterlife or lack thereof, however; he is scared to leave those he cares about, and doesn't want to leave anything unfinished.
